Essay topic:
"Although abuse of the system are inevitable, social welfare payments are essential to protect the rights citizens have to a guaranteed minimum income in a democratic society"
Discuss.
In a bid to boost the well-being of the population, governments worldwide have implemented their own social welfare system. However, over the years, these systems have displayed a series of flaws and frauds which remain omnipresent despite attempts at rectifying them. Nevertheless, scraping social benefits will most likely entail disastrous effects on society and the economy.
On the bright side, pensions, unemployment benefits and other similar government compensations contribute in bridging the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Indeed, not everyone is born equal including handicapped individuals while others are victims of unfortunate circumstance such as natural fires which reduce their homes and belongings to ashes. As such, a financial boost from the central authority not only raises fairness but also makes full use of people’s talents and skills by allowing them to participate in the economic activities of society on an equal footing. This eventually leads to economic prosperity in the long run.
However, a social welfare system may perpetuate unfairness and inequality if poorly devised and implemented. Hence, loopholes and corrupted public officials permit crooks, who are already highly educated and financially well-off, to falsify documents and receive benefits at the expense of poorer people. Otherwise, ill-conceived systems fail to properly investigate recipients’ claims. Moreover, in a rush to win an election, politicians often bow to public demands by promising extensive welfare payments which the national budget can barely afford. In turn, this places a heavier burden on taxpayers. It may even prompt a financial meltdown as evidenced in the 2008 financial crisis in the US whereby the government’s attempt at securing a house for every American family ended badly.
To conclude, the government should not merely rely on the existence of a social welfare system to promote equity and economic development. The system should be regularly monitored to thwart the creative tricks constantly employed by ill-intentioned parties aiming to find gaps around social welfare payments.
