Essay topic:
As mass communication and transport continue to grow, societies are becoming more and more alike leading to a phenomenon known as globalisation. Some people fear that globalization will inevitably lead to the total loss of cultural identity. To what extent do you agree with this statement?
As globalization cuts down barriers to trade, cut-throat competition has emerged within the travel and media industries. In turn, this has brought the internet, travelling and a spectrum of television programs within hands-reach of an increasing proportion of the global population. Nevertheless, it is arguable whether this phenomenon has prompted cultural diversification worldwide.
On one side, individuals are exposed to a plethora of languages and local traditions as they regularly pack their suitcases for holidays and business purposes. Cultural spots have further sprung up in various parts of the world as global migration takes a boost. Indeed, New York City now harbors a China Town while London is dotted with several Indian eateries. As such, though migrants tend to adopt the way of living of their host country, a part of themselves remain anchored to the values practised for centuries by their ancestors.
However, a certain degree of cultural erosion creeps in as future generations are born within the host nation. Youngsters are often completely ignorant of the native language spoken by their parents, preferring to sport locally-branded clothes and lunch at KFC in their attempt to blend in. In the long term, traditions vanish as elders pass away.
Moreover, as various countries ramp up their marketing campaigns of their tourism industry, local cultures are caught in the commercialization process. Hence, traditional songs and dances are often solely performed under the eyes of tourists who fail to appreciate the cultural meanings behind them. These performances may even be modified to suit the taste of the audience, further losing a core element established generations ago.
On a brighter front, these cultural displays may spur a cultural revolution. Indeed, we are witnessing a higher level of mergers among languages, performances and dishes worldwide. For instance, Italians and Indians can find a common ground with the Tandoori Pasta.
To sum up, although some cultures are slowly losing ground, others are gaining in popularity, especially those which are combinations of cultures originating from different corners of the world. As some organizations and countries cling to their cultural identity, despite doing so for economic gain, a world dominated by a unique culture currently appears far-fetch.
