Essay topic:
Elderly population has been a steadily increasing trend in many cultures. Is it a positive or negative trend?
The world as a whole and industrialized countries in particular, are moving through a demographic transition to 'greyer' societies. Some people think this greying population can be detrimental to the society whether others view this as an positive trend. In this essay, I am going to discuss both sides of the argument.
Several areas in the community will be be benefited from the surge in numbers of elderly adult. Volunteering is regarded as one measure of social capital and thus an indicator of healthy civil society. Elderly population can play an important role in the field of volunteering and they can also support and maintain informal social networks and thus binding communities and families within communities. Grand parenting has become an important social role which not only benefits grandparents themselves, but also it appears to benefit grandchildren substantially. For example, it would have been not possible for me to become successful in life if my grandma did not take care of me as my mother had to do a full time job.
While others argue that population aging generates many challenges and sparks concern about the pace of future economic growth, the operation and financial integrity of health care and pension system. Economic prosperity depends crucially on the size and quality of the workforce. As people gets older, their likelihood of participating in economic growth tend to decrease. Another concern is that there will be increasing burden on social security and government program to assist elderly and therefore less money will be available for meeting other national priorities. A good illustration of this is Canada where government finances strain under burden for supporting retirees as this country is experiencing the highest increase in elderly population.
The world is experiencing an increase in elderly population. Though it has some negative impacts on society, the positive sides are not too little to ignore. I think our aim including people and government should be to ensure that persons everywhere are able to age with security and dignity and to continue to participate in their societies with full rights.
