Many people these days travel far for work or spend more hours working. Does this trend have more advantages or disadvantages? What do you think about work-life balance?
Work represents one of the major aspects of a person’s life. Thus, it is always deemed important to have a good balance between work and the other aspects of a person’s life, to ensure a healthy and well organized living. Yet this is not always attainable due to restrictions that may be imposed.
Examples for such restrictions might be the long distance separating the habitat and work place, which requires a lot of time to be spent on a daily basis going to and back from work. Another example could be the heavy and durable workload that –if not controllable - would usually force a person to spend additional time at work, which normally deducts from the total number of hours that can be devoted to any other activities that could otherwise be done during the day.
One opinion can go for the fact that working hard would always ensure doing the job in a better shape and delivering a final product with a much better quality. This would also guarantee building a robust and well defined career path more quickly. Assuring perfectionism in the job and assuming more responsibilities would certainly be grabbing the attention and the appreciation of a person’s managers at work, which will normally lead to a better evaluation and consequently a number of benefits in return, similar to a better salary increase, an unexpected bonus or an early promotion, etc...
Looking to things from a different perception, another opinion could go for the fact that life involves another kind of activities that shall never be judged less important than work. In fact, proponents of this opinion see it even more vital to dedicate a significant part of the time, to entertainments, going out with friend, staying with family, and having rest. This opinion hinges on the core fact that unless all such activities are given priority, an individual may not be able to perform well at work. Though work, can be thought of as one of the essential component of a person identity, it should not be considered as the ultimate and the definitive meaning of life.
In conclusion, I would perceive it is quite important to maintain an acceptable and satisfactory balance between the different activities and responsibilities. However, the matter is fairly subjective as it totally depends on the individual himself, and the set of principles that control his mind and direct him generally in his life. If one is a work-centered person, he would always prefer to devote the majority of his time to his work, to keep staying at work for a longer time. On the opposite, if one is family-centered person, he would always go for maximizing the number of hours he can spend with his family, and may prefer to respect his promise to his children to let them go out on week end, over respecting a commitment with his manager that some work should be completed before the end of the week.
