Essay topic:
Some people think men and women have different natural abilities that make them suitable for different types of work. Others, however, believe that both men and women can be equally suited to do any type of work. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
For centuries, men and women have been deemed fit for certain type of work only. However I believe this is slowly changing and gender is no longer a primary rider for one to choose a career.
An argument can be made that certain types of jobs are naturally suited for a particular gender. These jobs either require physical agility or behavioural expertise that can only be expected from a specific gender. For examples, women are historically known to be more supportive emotionally and can be seen working in professions such as nursing and child care. Similarly men are thought to be more strong and aggressive. Therefore we see majority of male population in armed forces and other services that need more physical strength.
However, the pattern is changing now and it is very common to see a good mix of genders in every vocation. Men and women can be seen working and excelling in every possible occupation. Police force is one good example where women have been actively participating. It was originally thought to be a profession for men, because it demands physical strength and courage. But ever since the inception of women police force in India in 1962, ladies have maintained an exceptional track record and officers like Kiran Bedi have received world-side recognition. Similarly, there are men who have become renowned fashion designer – a profession formerly thought to be feminine choice.
Furthermore, the spread of education and advancement in technology has also helped in bridging the gap. The modern machines have minimized the need a lot of physical labour in needed for many jobs. In addition to that access to proper training has enabled women to enter the once forbidden trades like mechanical engineering and construction.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that profession is a matter of personal preference and the gender of someone does not limit him or her from choosing any particular career.
