Globalisation is an economic tidal wave that is sweeping over the world and undoubtedly the spread of multinational companies(MNCs) are the direct effect of globalization. Some people think that this spread is a positive thing while other argue that it could be detrimental for the host country. In this essay, I am going to write about both points of view and state my opinion.

There are several reasons why many advocate that MNC are detrimental to the communities to which they operate. The principal reason is perhaps MNC are accused of social un-justice, unfair working condition, as well as lack of concern for the environment. MNCs which were previously restricted to commercial activities are increasingly influencing political decisions. Many think that there is a threat of corporations ruling the world because they are gaining power due to globalisation. Spread of MNCs due to globalisation also leading to incursion of communicable diseases. For example, deadly disease like AIDS are being spread by travelers to the remotest corners of the globe.

However, there are also many instances where MNCs help to raise the standard of living and participate in improving economy of the host country. Supporters of globalisation argue that it has the potential to make this world a better place to live in and solve some deep seated problems like unemployment and poverty. Cultural intermingling is another direct effect where each country is learning more about other culture and also there is more influx of information between two countries. MNCs also provide poor countries, through infusion of foreign capital and technology, the chance to develop economically. For example, a lot of people have become employed in Cambodia as a result of establishment of several garment factory by MNCs.

In conclusion, it is difficult to say whether the spread of MNC is truly good or bad, as there are so many factors that contribute to their role in developing and underdeveloped countries. I think it would be wise for the government to impose an effective legislation to overcome the negative impact caused by this spread of MNCs.
