Essay topic:
Some people think the government should pay for health care and education, but other people think it’s not government’s responsibility. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Nothing has been so much debated as government’s role in supporting health care and education. Some people are of the opinion that it should be the priority of government to fund these sectors, while others are opposed to it on the ground that this is not the government’s obligation. Personally, I agree with the former.
Admittedly, with a limited financial budget, government may not be able to pay for these industries. To be specific, instead of health care and education, there are more important issues, including national security, alleviating poverty and stimulating national economy that should be put into priority. Restrained by its budget, the government is unlikely to dedicate enough resources and money into health care and education. What is more, private companies can always contribute to institutions, schools and hospitals. It is these private owned enterprises that have the ability to help. This is already happening in some countries, where high-tech companies donate a huge amount of money facilitating related scientific researches and manufacture companies invest their new medical equipment to hospitals, for example.
Nevertheless, reaching the conclusion above does not necessarily indicate that health care and education are not the obligation of governments. In fact, the health of the general public should be recognized as one of the essential duties of the government. Without the investment from the congress, hospitals would possibly be taken advantage of big pharmaceutical companies who concern more about year-end revenue than the health conditions of the residents. Therefore, empowered and chosen by the citizens, governments should take the responsibility to protect tax payers.
In addition, educating the next generation directly impacts the future of a country; hence the government has an inevitable obligation. That is to say, teachers not only disseminate valuable knowledge at schools but mould characters of the students so that they would grow up being decent and moral human beings. Moreover, if government stops funding the schools and universities, the tuition fees would highly likely be increased, which leaves those from poor families with no choice but to quit school. Generating a fair society regarding that everyone has the equal right to study is also a crucial duty of the government.
In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, government should play a vital role in facilitating health and education financially.
