By investing in tourism, we can earn a lot of revenue and growth in national economy at the same time it damages the local culture. What is your opinion?
Tourism is one of the major industries of a nation. With the advancement of technology nowadays, the world has shrunk, meaning now it possible to travel to far-off corners of the world with ease and comfort. With globalization, more and more people are now willing to traverse the length and breadth of the world to become globe –trotters.
Tourism plays a vital role in the economic growth of any nation. It is a great source of revenue generation not only from the indigenous population of the nation, but also from foreign nationals visiting the various tourist destinations. India is a land having a rich historical background. As such, it can boost of being home to many historical destinations of tourist interest like the Taj Mahal, various old forts like the Red Fort, ancient temples of the south etc. And also many architectural wonder of many of the previous civilizations.
Investing in tourism can actually contribute to the growth of the national economy. Better infrastructure like clean places to stay, hygienic food, easy-to-find modes of transport are major areas the advancement of which can actually provide a boost to the tourism of a place. It is important that we be able to attract the attention of not only domestic travelers but also the foreign nationals as they are a source of the much needed foreign exchange. More the people visiting a particular tourist spot, higher the revenue generated and thus more the economic growth.
But some people put forth the argument that tourism destroys the local culture. To what extent is this argument valid? I believe that the foreign nationals or tourists do have some impact on the local culture, but it is more on the positive note rather than the negative one. Interacting with the tourists gives the local people an insight into their culture as well and makes them more appreciative of it. It teaches tolerance and promotes the feeling of communal harmony. It also builds a feeling of camaraderie. Tourism also gives a boost to the local cottage industries like handicrafts as tourists are always eager to take home souvenirs from their travels of different places.
In sum, I would like to say that in my opinion investing in tourism has m ore pros than cons. It is only with the advancement in tourism that we can justify the world being a true global village.
