It is said that experience is a virtue. Majority of working people are getting older in countries such as Japan, which has provided them with some benefits. However, I believe that there is a flip side to this situation which outweighs the positives.
It’s true that older people makes for more stable and mature workers. With growing age, people become more stable and tend to stick to one company, thus reducing rework involved in training new employees every few years. With more industry experience behind them, they tend to make more informed decisions and hence reduce operational risks. Also at personal level, older people are mature citizens and constitute more peaceful and law abiding society.
On the other hand, lack of young professionals blocks the infusion of new ideas in an organization. It’s a known behavioural fact that as people age, they tend to become more averse to taking risks. Younger employees are more enthusiastic, do not shy away from putting in extra effort and have more adventurous aptitude which makes them ideal for today’s fast changing marketplace. With majority of the citizens in the older spectrum, such countries fall short of new business ideas and modern outlook towards fast-paced verticals such as IT.
Furthermore, elderly people are more inclined to go with the flow and avoid trying to bring any change to the society. Young people are keener to get involved and transform the system. With relatively fresh out of education, they are eager to show results and change the society. With abundance of aged politicians and entrepreneurs, a country will be stuck in the past and will face dearth of fresh perspective. The current political situation in India is a very good example of the same. With minimal involvement of young generation, country’s political future is at mercy of out-dated thinking of old bureaucrats.
To summarize, I would like to emphasize that having majority of people in older age group will have negative impact on a country’s political, economic and social arena. With lack of involvement of young blood, the country will lose stand in the modern world.
