Essay topic:
Nowadays, education overseas has become more accessible and growing numbers of people send their offspring in other countries. However, this trend has its detractors. Discuss.
As various universities worldwide revamp their marketing campaigns, an increasing number of foreign students are being encouraged to enroll for a course overseas. While this trend has positively benefited the students and the universities themselves, it has brought some pain to the home country and parents of the students.
Concerning the students themselves, an overseas education has boosted their level of independence since this is often the first time of their life that they are living under different roofs from their parents. It further enables them to gain access to better quality education given that the tertiary institutions in their home country are often overcrowded and lack the appropriate facilities. Their cultural horizon is also broadened by the exposure to different food, customs and people from varying backgrounds.
However, foreign universities often charge more to foreign students as compared to local ones and restrict the amount of scholarships to which the former are eligible to. As such, while these establishments are getting richer, foreign students’ parents need to fork out huge sums of money to fund their offspring’s degree. These often go to waste if the latter is particularly immature, preferring to have fun in their parents’ absence. Parents may feel even more heartbroken if their children fail to adapt to the lifestyle of their country of destination. Cultural shock and homesickness are common symptoms which afflict international students, especially new comers.
In addition, though the country of studies usually expands at the back of the related economic activities which include accommodation, transport and food, the home country of the students may suffer an opposite predicament. Indeed, numerous developing countries have complained about brain drain whereby those who pursue their tertiary education abroad prefer to start a career there due to the lack of opportunities in their home country.
To conclude, despite the fact that foreign education does promote cultural exchange and the personal growth of students, it fails to benefit all parties involved equally.
