Essay topic:
People in all modern societies use drugs, but today's youth are expertimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. Some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example.
Discuss the causes and some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern day society. Make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse.
Drugs have been in use since time immemorial as evidenced by archaeological finds of their existence among ancient civilizations. Nevertheless, experts are ringing the alarm bell about their current usage as novel and more potent forms of these products appear and are increasingly being embraced by children from a younger age. While numerous roots account for this worrying phenomenon, solutions can nonetheless be devised to save the younger generation from the disastrous effects of drugs.
On one hand, the surging materialistic interest underpinning our society has compelled parents to put longer hours at work. The emancipation of women over the past decades has resulted into a dwindling proportion of women who opt to sacrifice their career for their family. In turn, youngsters left with little supervision are free to experiment matters which usually would have been forbidden by their parents. Unfortunately, this may include drugs.
Living in a media-rich society, moreover, worses the situatio. Young adults are, hence, increasingly exposed to the life of movie stars through the multiple media outlets available nowadays. Sadly, the latter often fail to act as role models by consuming cocaine or similar products on a regular basis.
While it is undeniable that drugs negatively the health of their users, their effects on their personal life and career may, at times, prove to be even more damaging. In extreme cases, the young adult may find himself on the street, rejected by his own family. Fortunately, for others, drugs may amount to a temporary phase of their life during which they attempt to seek their own identity and indulge in new experiences. Hence, poor academic results and minor run-ins with the police and the judicial system may be a small price to pay for a valuable life lesson which they are most likely to engrave in their long term memory.
Although, drug usage is likely to remain a feature of our society, certain measures can be taken to prevent it from spreading beyond control. Involving all members of society would certainly boost the effectiveness of the fight against drugs. While schools can employ more psychologists and youth counsellors to detect early signs of drug addiction among students, parents can be encouraged to spend more quality time with their offspring. Penalties regarding sales of drugs to teenagers can be strengthened and the police force may launch a major crackdown of the drug industry.
All in all, drug usage among young adults and children is a complex problem which can be curbed to some extent with the involvement of all adults of our society and with the implementation of certain solutions.
