On the bright side, genetically-modified meat and vegetables last longer, rendering frequent trips to the market a thing of the past. These produce are, furthermore, already cleaned, cut and packaged in smaller sizes, enabling quicker consumption. Moreover, the introduction of microwaveable meals has been welcomed by busy workers who can avoid the ordeal of waiting in front of the stove or washing pans, thus, saving precious time.
These trends have not only added extra minutes to our day but have eased the tasks of amateur cooks. As such, they no longer have to search for pancake recipes but can instead purchase ready-made mix from the local store. Appliances in the likes of electric mixer and dish washer have further transformed cooking into a more enjoyable experience.
However, in the process, our cooking skills have suffered. Regular visits to fast food outlets fail to equip most youngsters with basic cooking knowledge. On the other hand, due to the widespread availability of food produce, the process of killing a chicken or scaling a fish may no longer form part of the basic training of apprentice cooks. At this current trend, our cooking heritage and cultures may be lost among future generations.
Moreover, our health has also become victim of this food revolution. Scientists claim that the overuse of chemicals in our food has sparked a wave of cancer and allergies, which were rare occurrences a few decades ago. In addition, with technologically-advanced machines supporting the food industry, fast food outlets have sprung up in every corner of the globe. In turn, this has boosted obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases to a worryingly high level.
To conclude, the current changes regarding food preparation have not necessarily improved our lifestyle.
