Essay topic:
Parents are the best teachers. Do you agree or disagree?
With the worsening academic performance of students and the rising victims of drugs and other social vices among youngsters, it is arguable whether schools, the environment where they spend the majority of their time, are best placed to educate children. Some argue that parents will fare better at the task.
On one side, parents know their offspring best, accompanying them during a significant segment of their childhood and adolescence. As such, being more aware of the weaknesses and personality traits of their children, parents can tailor their teaching methods accordingly. Statistics further back the fact that those students who are regularly assisted in completing their school homework by their parents perform better than those who are not.
Nevertheless, while some parents act excellent role models, others fail to follow suit. Nowadays, with the demanding responsibilities at work, parents can spare little quality time with their offspring. With time, both groups grow into perfect strangers to each other, impeding the critical teaching and learning process. On the other hand, alcohol or drugs have ruined the life of other adults, leaving a bleak future for their children. In turn, these children tend to replicate their parents’ mistake, trapping future generations in a vicious cycle. It can further be argued that most parents are ill-prepared for the academic education of their children as they do not possess a formal qualification and undergo stringent teaching training as teachers do.
To conclude, both teachers and parents are equally responsible to breed our future generation of responsible adults. While teachers seem to be best suited for the intellectual development of children, parents can focus more on inculcating them with the appropriate cultural and social values. Though both are likely to err at times, children can, nevertheless, rely of the support of the other party.
