Essay topic:
Scientists and the news media are presenting ever more evidence of climate change. Governments cannot be expected to solve this problem. It is the responsibility of individuals to change their lifestyle to prevent further damage.
What are your views?
Everyone agrees that it is paramount to curb the damaging effects which global warming is inflicting on our environment. Sadly, opinions diverge concerning the share of responsibility which is attributable to each party. Although it seems that the government has relatively more resources and power to tackle this problem, individuals should, nevertheless, not turn a blind eye towards their moral duty to safeguard the environmental legacy of future generations.
First, it should be highlighted that incentive is the main culprit behind the high level of inaction. Indeed, any solution devised to curb worldwide pollution necessitates efforts from each one of us. Indeed, someone, who painstakingly recycles all his rubbish while his neighbors fail to do so, is unlikely to experience any environmental improvement. Thus, it is incumbent on the government to impose laws which will push everyone to adopt the same habits in order to win the fight against global warming.
Moreover, any cure proposed by the authorities is likely to be expensive. Hence, the latter has an obligation to step in so as to help those at the bottom of the economic ladder. For instance, the Australian government has decided to grant tax rebates to small businesses to alleviate the load of its newly-crafted carbon tax. As such, everyone is given a fair chance at reducing their carbon footprint.
However, individuals’ share of responsibility should not be restricted to merely following the laws and measures inflicted by the state. This is due to the fact that actions spearheaded by someone can prompt others, including the authorities, to make a move in the right direction. For instance, with the production of a movie backed by sound empirical evidence, Al Gore managed to raise awareness about the havoc which global warming can wreak if left unaddressed.
To summarize, the best alternative to save the Earth entails cooperation between the government and citizens. While the latter is particularly adept at generating ideas, the state is the one which has the capacity to turn them into concrete projects as well as influence everyone into adopting.
