Although access to medical facilities is a basic human right, governments worldwide are experiencing difficulties in maintaining it given the exorbitant costs associated. While privatizing the health care sector may alleviate the state’s financial burden, this may lead to a general decline in the physical and mental health of the population in the long run.

On one hand, free medical treatments encourage abuse. Indeed, at the slightest sign of illness, some individuals are compelled to rush to the emergencies even though their condition is not alarming. Besides hindering the medical services of those patients in real need, they may also contribute to a waste of the limited resources of hospitals and medical centers. Moreover, the medical help requested by some patients may be particularly high. With a state funded health care system, some healthy individuals may unfairly bear other people’s expenses through taxes.

Nevertheless, leaving the entire health care system within the hands of the market may not be the ideal solution. Some people especially those facing financial difficulties may not be able to afford the cost of a simple visit to the doctor. Others may fail to undergo regular checkups or delay operations up to the point when their medical expenses are exploding or their disease is beyond treatment. Furthermore, forcing citizens to bear their own medical costs may spur the rate at which some contagious diseases propagate as some individuals opt not to receive basic vaccines. As such, the economic and societal consequences of privatizing the health care sector may outpace the cost of providing these services for free.

To conclude, I believe that rudimental medical treatments should be put at the disposition of the population for free. Other facilities likely to benefit a select group of individuals or associated with expensive fees can be the domain of the private sector. Alternatively, the central authority may fund the medical services of those at the bottom of the social ladder or encourage charities and similar organizations to do so. Therefore, the best outcome can be obtained through the collaboration of both the public and the private sectors.
