Given is the chart comparing the number of foreign visitors in various regions throughout the world from 1990 to 2005. It is evident that there was an upward trend in international tourist arrivals in all the areas under study.
More specifically, North America dominated as the figure grew exponentially from 70 million in 1990 to 90 million in 2000 before decreasing fractionally over the next 5 years. Additionally, starting at just over 30 million, the international arrival in Central and Eastern Europe rocketed and tripled to approximately 90 million, ranking second. This region saw the fastest increase; therefore, the gap between it and North America narrowed during a 15-year period. South-East Asia also shared the same pattern, finishing at nearly 50 million.
To turn to Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, the volume of international visitors rose steadily over the years. However, it is interesting to note that although these two areas started at the same level in 1990, Sub-Saharan Africa then outstripped South America. The number for the former reached 20 million while that for the latter came last and stood at practically 15 million at the end of the period.
