Essay topic:
Some people think it is a waste of money to establish libraries since the public can use the Internet at home to obtain information, do you agree or disagree?
In the past few decades, the pace of changes in the development of science and technology is beyond our imagination, and our reading habit has been transferred along with it. With an increasing number of people reading through Internet, some claim that libraries are out of date. In my opinion, there is no need for government spending money on libraries under current situation.
Building public libraries is a waste of tax payers' money. One of the convincing argument is that there are many alternative ways people can acquire information other than reading a library books. For instance, thanks to the invention of Internet, individuals are now able to read daily news on their computers and smart phones. In addition, with the development of science and technology, there is a decreasing number of people who are willing to use the libraries. Since individual can both get informed and educated by various other media, such as TV, computer and newspaper, they find it is unnecessary to go to the libraries to study. As a result, a lot of libraries are not fully used, which is not only a waste of money but also a waste of valuable resources. Moreover, compared with the modern approach of reading, reading at a public library is not convenient. To be specific, those who want to use the libraries gave to undergo a time-consuming process before they can actually sit down and read in the library. Besides, there are always a lot of rules implemented in the public libraries. For example, readers have to have a valid certificate so that they can enter, and users in the libraries can not eat or talk while others are reading. Nevertheless, reading at home or other places in this case, will be proved more comfortable than reading at a library.
Some people may argue that public libraries are good places for young students to used due to the fact that libraries have no TVs or computers which can distract students from their study. This argument seems to be true at the first glance; however, it is unreasonable. It is not uncommon to notice that young students may daydream and play with their friends at the libraries, because they are not at home where they are supervised by their parents. Additionally, the money spend on building and managing the libraries can be used at other more crucial issues. For instance, in stead of building a public library, government can use the money to establish a primary school, which apparently is a more efficient way to improve the general education level.
To sum up, libraries are not useful under the modern life. Therefore, it is no point for government to put money on it when those kind of money can be used more efficiently on other issues.
