Whether the children's leisure activities should be entirely educational or it is enough to be simply entertaining; a lot of debates and discussions have arisen these days, tackling this issue.
Some people believe that the educational aspect is pretty important to be eminent and obvious in a child toy. Advocates of this belief perceive that this would certainly have a perceptible positive impact on the cognitive skills of a child, and will definitely help boosting the development rate of his intellectual skills. Furthermore, proponents do believe that a complete and continuous disappearance of this educational aspect, would probably affect the intelligence of a child in a negative way, especially if this happens during the early stages, where brain development is quite critical.
On the opposite side, opponents of the aforementioned point of view, have recently started to gain large grounds. According to them, a child is in real need of simple, uncomplicated toys, which are just made for the entertainment sake, lacking all signs of educational aspects. Those who stand at this side, base their point on the results of several studies carried out by a set of research institutes scattered around the world. The outcome of these studies highlighted the importance of supplying children with entertaining materials while ensuring to avoid the injection of any educational material, particularly during the first 5 years of a child life. These studies emphasize on relevancy of this matter and the responsibility of parents and relatives toward their children in this regard.
According to me, I would see that it is very useful to educate children and make them learn new stuff throw playing. However, focusing on the educational material and discounting the importance of the simple entertainment for a child is wrong, and will not probably yield to good results that both parents are normally expecting. The best thing is to work on creating a compromise between the two lines and ensure both aspects are equally satisfied.
On the personal level, I have a child who is presently five years old. During the past years, we were very keen to provide him with the kind of toys that can really fulfill his needs and best suits his mind. Choosing the adequate toy for our child, will always remain and difficult and tedious task...
