The first chart depicts changes in the number of married and divorced couples in the USA over a 30-year period while the second chart offers a glimpse of American matrimonial status in 1970 and 2000.
Overall, there was a gradual decrease in the number of marriages throughout the course. Also, it is obvious that the vast majority of American adults were married in both given years.
In 1970, there were 2.5 million married couples in the USA, nearly doubling the divorce numbers. The figures for marriages remained stagnant for the next decade and subsequently fell by 10% every next 10 year to capture 2 million in 2000. The divorce rate, however, reached a high of around 2.5 million prior to declining steadily to the 1970 mark at the end of the period.
Meanwhile, 70% of American adult citizens were married in 1970, 10% higher than those in 2000. With the exception of the widowed following the downward trend, the proportion of American divorcees and peole never being married slightly rose to 8% and 20% respectively by 2000.
