Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television has destroyed communication among friends and family. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Nowadays, a household which does not possess a television set is a rare occurrence. This ubiquitous device bears a strong hold on our life. Though its influence has mostly been positive, some people, nevertheless, argue that it has impaired our communication with relatives and friends.
On one hand, the increasing appeal of television programs has shifted people’s attention from their family members to the more popular black box. In most modern households, dinner is no longer served in the dining room but in the living room where everyone can keep track of the latest television show. As the traditional dinner conversation suffers a slow death, people living under the same roof become perfect strangers to each other. This social problem is further compounded as the cost of technology drops. Thus, an average family is expected to own more than 1 television set, most often, one in each bedroom. This means that outside dinner time, each individual is likely to watch his own program, further deterring communication with each other.
Fortunately, outside the household, television has managed to unite groups of people. For instance, many fans decide to gather in a bar to support their favorite sports team. Otherwise, friends often meet to discuss the latest television show. As major media outlets compete to attract a wider audience, the diversity of programs has exploded, enabling more people to find a common topic of conversation. Reality shows have turned out to be particularly excellent crowd magnets. Someone with a friend or relative participating in these programs is, hence, most likely to express strong support towards the candidate, often gathering a fan base in the process. Indeed, media organizations understand that televisions are, in fact, channels of communication which allow people with a common interest to come together.
To conclude, televisions have the capacity to both attract like-minded friends and relatives and drive them apart. Therefore, individuals should make judicious use of this tool so as not to inflict damage on their social life.
