Essay topic:
It has been argued that companies and private individual, not the government should pay the bill to clean up environmental pollution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Undoubtedly, having a clean biophysical surrounding is an important factor for our sustainable survival. Environmental pollution is one of the most unwanted problems the world is facing today. Though there is a heated debate whether government or private companies and individual ought to pay the bill for cleaning up the pollution, my view is that all of them might need to work together to overcome this problem.
There are several reasons why all of these parties should have a share of the cost of cleaning up the pollution. Corporations make profit from the processes that cause the pollution, government make money by taxing the profit made by the polluting companies. Public make its share in this whole process by using goods made by polluting process. Therefore, this is a vicious cycle where everyone is contributing to create pollution either directly or indirectly. For example, knowing the fact that plastic bags are not ecofriendly government is permitting companies to produce them and public all around the world are using them in everyday life.
A second reason why they are not solely responsible for the total cost of cleaning up is that companies dump toxic products mostly in the river system. If companies had to dispose them properly, they will have to compromise with their profits. Then companies left with the choice of laying off people which will increase the unemployment rate and have a negative impact on global economy. Likewise public prefer car over public transport because it is more convenient and time saving though emission from vehicles is one of the most important factors for causing pollution. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of a government to ensure a healthy social structure for all its citizen. If tax revenue is not sufficient for disposing of waste material, government can perform this responsibility by availing loan. For example, International Monetary Fund lend huge amount of money to government at a very minimum interest rate for such purposes.
Righting our wrong is the perfect solution for pollution. Since world is experiencing the highest possible level of pollution, I think, this situation calls for concerted effort of government, public and private corporations to solve or at least mitigate the whole gamut resulting from this environmental pollution.
