Many people want their country to host an international sporting event. Others believe that international sporting event bring more problems than benefits. Discuss both views and include your opinion, supported by examples.
Countries worldwide compete to win the privilege of holding global sport events. This is chiefly due to the fact that these events uplift the image and economy of these nations. Unfortunately, in some cases, they may prove to be more of a plague than a boon.
To start with, international sporting events enable the host country to boost its economy and market its capabilities and culture across the globe. In this manner, China demonstrated its exemplary skills, financial power and deep cultural heritage to the world through its flawless performances at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Game. Simultaneously, it was able to attract crowds of tourists who in turn contributed to its national revenue through their purchases. Hence, despite all the efforts and expenses involved in hosting such as event, the benefits reaped can be multifold.
On the other hand, the aftermath of these sports events have occasionally proved to be disastrous to some of the host countries. As nations rival to outperform the previous Olympic Games staged by their counterparts, they are compelled to disburse a higher amount of funds. Thus, the Olympic Game of 2004 has been partly blamed for Greece’s current financial deficit. This situation occurred because the one-off expenses incurred were not recouped in subsequent years as the sport facilities constructed fell into a state of abandon. Therefore, problems related to holding international sporting events tend to arise after all the celebrations have ended.
To conclude, planning and running a global sport event is generally advantageous to the host country. The long term effects brought by these events, however, depend on how the countries employ the buildings and facilities erected for that purpose after the events themselves.
