Essay topic:
Some people prefer shopping in shopping centers, while others prefer local markets. What are the advantages of each?
In this increasingly materialistic society, shopping has gained in popularity among many individuals. While some of them prefer to browse the spotless windows of retailers in shopping complexes, others would rather wander among the attractive stalls in local markets. Indeed, both locations boast certain features that appeal to specific category of consumers.
On one hand, shopping centers are ideal for busy workers seeking a variety of products to purchase and activities to indulge in. Their hectic work schedules often leave them little time for shopping, compelling them to do so in the evening or at night. Shopping malls, unlike markets, remain open at these late hours of the day, therefore, suit their timetable. They further feature all the items which these buyers may require under roof, saving their previous time as they can avoid lengthy travel to fulfill their shopping lists. These buildings are further ideally located near public transport or residential areas, rendering them easily accessible to the public. In this manner, shopping centers suit the modern lifestyle of most people in both developed and developing countries.
On the other hand, local markets are particularly suitable for tourists as well as individuals searching for authentic produce and wishing to enjoy a unique shopping experience. This is because market stalls are usually run by locals who manufacture their own products instead of importing mass produced items which are so ubiquitous in shopping malls. As such, these folkloric areas, for instance, the Victoria Market in Melbourne, brim with local culture and explain why they are usually featured in tourist brochures as popular places of interest.
To conclude, local markets and shopping centers are likely to retain their popularity among the general population. Though shopping centers usually receive more frequent visits from shoppers, local markets are the heart and soul of a particular region, thus, are unlikely to disappear soon.
