The number of serious offenses being carried out by re-offender have increased by more than half in last decade. There could be a lot of reason to push a person to commit crime again and government should implement sensible policy to ensure that when people are released they are not going to recommit crime.
There are several reasons why criminals are committing crime again and again. Ex-offenders face significant barriers to obtaining education, vocational training, gainful employment, housing, substance abuse treatment and mental health services. These barriers often present challenge that contribute to re-offending. Very often, ex-offenders lack education or job skills, that are essential for gaining and maintaining employment. These re-offenders suffer not only from the effect of their crime but also a criminal justice system that is ill equipped to help them properly re-enter into the society.
It is no secret that one of the main causes of re-offending is a lack of opportunities for recently released offender. Several measures can be taken to prevent criminals from committing crime again. Government should make educational and vocational programs more accessible to inmates by increasing capacity and removing barrier and restriction to enrollment. Increasing enrollment in these programs would improve the employment opportunities of participants upon release. Rather than punishing a criminal always, government should ensure rehabilitation by means of education or therapy to bring a criminal into a more peaceful state of mind which would in turn refrain them from committing crime again.
To sum up, there is not only one cause why criminals are re-offending and government should be committed to more effective punishment and rehabilitation, so that public is better protected from crime.
