Essay topic:
Nowadays, pollution and waste levels are increasing rapidly. How does this effect ordinary people? What steps can be taken to overcome this problem?
As the world population booms, the amount of pollution and waste produced are simultaneously exploding. This has given birth to the rubbish conundrum which has proven to be a headache for everyone alike. Nevertheless, cures can be devised by the public sector to bring this issue within a manageable level.
To start with, citizens worldwide have been urged by governmental bodies to reduce the level of waste generated and the way they disposed of it through a series of laws and educational campaigns. For instance, Singaporeans can be handed heavy fines for dumping rubbish illegally in public places while Australians consumers may need to pay for carbon taxes upon the purchase of certain goods and services. Developing countries, on the other hand, are moving towards the recycling of their waste materials in a similar fashion as their more economically-advanced counterparts. On a global scale, consumers are, hence, being urged to adopt greener habits in an attempt to preserve the environment.
Despite the measures adopted by each region, pollution remains a contentious global issue. Each nation will continue to implement ways to reduce their level of pollution, but will fall in disagreement in regards to the severity of these schemes as witnessed by their failure to replace the Kyoto Protocol with a fresh agreement to curb global warming. I believe that every nation should attempt to reduce their carbon emission by the same degree but rich nations may need to help poorer ones so as not to compromise their economic growth. For example, the American corporations may have to indemnify Indonesian farmers to prevent them from cutting their natural forests or supply their subsidiaries in China with greener technology as to lessen their air and noise pollution.
To conclude, pollution and waste will remain a major predicament of countries worldwide. Nonetheless, co-operation and constant dialogues among them may bring these illnesses under control.
