Essay topic:
People today spend too much time on personal enjoyment – doing things they like to do – rather than doing things they should do.
Every single human being on this earth has duties that they must do as well as activities that they enjoy doing. As a result, one must balance these two in order to live successfully. However, in my opinion, people nowadays tend to spend too much time on doing things they are obliged to do rather enjoy some quality time on personal activities.
From the time we attend high school, we are obliged to sit in stiff chair for long hours five times a week. Although there are some who appreciate the value of gaining education, spending our precious youth in classrooms taught by old-fashioned teachers is not the ideal type of life people would choose. In no way I disagree with the fact that school is the main source of knowledge as well as the main enemy of our personal enjoyment. For instance, my younger brother is addicted to sports, especially football and wants to pursue a career in this specific field. However, overwhelmed by the pile of assignments and works he has to finish in school, he eventually ended up doing things he ‘should’ do.
Only when we think that all the pressure of high school is under the roof, the necessity of working and earning money comes along with even more stress and pressure. Without a doubt, the necessity of working is the most vital aspect of one’s life, if not the most enjoyable one. Despite the few number of people who supposedly enjoy working in their desirable field, the number of people who even despise the idea of waking up at 6 am in the morning is much higher. I can tell this from my father’s pragmatic instance. Although his job is highly paid as well as highly respected profession, he is always in a stress working in office and dealing with customers who release negative energy. As a result, he ended up doing the right thing, not for his personal enjoyment.
In addition, while people attend high schools and go to work, they live under the obligation that they need to meet the satisfaction of others. Especially the society we reside in today, there are endless number of rules and regulations that I can’t even enumerate. From the moment one steps out of his/her house, he/she will be bombarded with rules stating what the person can or can’t do such as don’t park here, don’t smoke here, used only for people over 18, and many more regulations that can be seen in everyday life. For example, when my brother and I intended to watch a heart-breaking motivational movie with no explicit content, they turned us away saying it was supposedly for only adults. As a result, we citizens are exhausted and deprived of doing what we enjoy to do.
Taking account of all these factors, one can infer that although there are certain people who enjoy doing what they do, most others are bombarded with life’s rules and regulations from the time people attend high school to start working in practical life. Therefore, in order make some quality time for personal enjoyment, we must balance our ‘wants’ and ‘needs’.
